New Orleans - Tulane senior All-American Cairo Santos completed a sweep of awards on Monday as he was named the College Football Performance Awards' (CFPA) National Placekicker of the Week, a Lou Groza Star of the Week and the Conference USA and Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Special Teams Player of the Week.
Santos, who hails from Brasilia, Brazil, tied a school single-game record with five made field goals, including the game-winner from 42 yards in a triple overtime, 36-33, win over East Carolina last Saturday at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. For the game, Santos connected from 42 yards three times, 43 yards and 28 yards.
After East Carolina missed a field goal on the first possession of the third overtime period, Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson did not hesitate to send Santos, the 2012 Lou Groza Award winner, on to the field for the Green Wave's first play and Santos delivered.
"Without a doubt, I set up for the field goal on the first play, because when you have the best kicker in the nation, that's what you do," Johnson said.
Santos is now 12-of-16 on the year and has back-to-back contests with game-winning field goals after connecting on a 27-yard field goal against North Texas as time expired the previous week. He also sent five of his six kickoffs into the back of the end zone and allowed the Pirates just one kickoff return on the day.
Tulane is 5-2 overall and 3-0 in Conference USA play and will host preseason C-USA favorite Tulsa at the Superdome on Saturday, Oct. 26 at 2:30 p.m.
