New Orleans - Fresh off a thrilling 24-21 homecoming victory over North Texas last weekend, two Tulane football student-athletes have been honored for their standout play as sophomore Lorenzo Doss was selected as the Conference USA and Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) Defensive Player of the Week and senior nickelback Derrick Strozier was named the C-USA and LSWA Special Teams Player of the Week.

Doss, who hails from New Orleans and is a graduate of St. Augustine High School, came up with a pair of interceptions and returned one for a score during last Saturday's victory. Doss recorded his first in the opening quarter and tacked on his second, which he returned it 67 yards for a touchdown to give the Green Wave a 21-7 lead in the third quarter.

For Doss, the interceptions were his third and fourth of the season and he now has nine for his career, which ranks tied for 10th among TU's career leaders. Doss also added three tackles on the day.

A native of Orlando, Fla., Strozier made history in last week's win when he became the first player in the 119-year history of Tulane football to return a blocked field goal for a touchdown.

Tulane sophomore Darion Monroe blocked North Texas' Zach Paul's 38-yard attempt and Strozier picked up the loose ball and raced 62 yards untouched for a third quarter touchdown that broke the game open and gave the Wave a 14-7 lead. Strozier also added a team-best seven tackles on the day.

With its current overall and conference record, it's the first time the Green Wave is 4-2 since 1997 and started 2-0 in league play for the first since 1998 when Tulane finished 12-0 and won the C-USA title with a 6-0 league record.

Tulane is the top team in the nation in turnovers gained with 18 (11 int./7 fumbles) and has turned the takeaways into 58 points courtesy of seven touchdowns and three field goals.

With Doss' award this week, a Tulane player has now captured the conference's weekly defensive award for the second straight week. Sophomore cornerback Jordan Batiste was last week's recipient for the Green Wave. This is the first time that Tulane has won Defensive Player of the Week honors back-to-back weeks in 18 years as a member of C-USA.

Doss' four interceptions this season leads C-USA and ranks ninth nationally. He also ranks second in the league and 24th nationally in passes defended with nine on the year.

Tulane returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 12, when the Green Wave play host to C-USA foe East Carolina at 2:30 p.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. The game against the Pirates is the second of three consecutive home games for the Wave as Tulane will enjoy a bye before squaring off against league foe Tulsa on Oct. 26.
