NEW ORLEANS - On the eve of its last major scrimmage of the preseason, the Tulane football team elected four team captains Friday. Junior cornerback Tim Carter, senior wideout JaJuan Dawson, senior offensive guard Jerry Godfrey and junior linebacker Jerry Phillips were selected to represent the Green Wave as captains for 1999. Head coach Chris Scelfo informed the squad of the election results during a Friday afternoon meeting.

"Being selected as a captain by your teammates is one of the highest honors you can receive in college football," said Scelfo. "It says a lot about the quality of those four individuals.

"Those four guys won't win games by themselves, but they've proven their leadership abilities and have earned the trust of their teammates."

Earlier in the day, Scelfo sent his charges through a two-hour morning workout in shoulder pads and shorts. The squad was scheduled to practice again Friday afternoon, but Scelfo instead chose to give his team an afternoon of rest prior to Saturday's morning scrimmage.

The Wave players and coaches will participate in Fan Day Saturday at 11:30 a.m. in the Wilson Center. Fan Day provides the Tulane faithful an opportunity to get autographs and have pictures taken with their favorite players.

Defending C-USA champion Tulane opens the 1999 season against Southern Miss on Labor Day, Sept. 6, at 2 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by Fox Sports Net.
