On the conditioning drills his team does throughout preseason camp
"We're still conditioning, and what I like to do is condition during practice. So if you run hard and go hard, that's part of your conditioning. And we tried to step up the tempo. This morning was a really fast tempo and we really tried to stress that this morning. They got stressed and they're pretty tired now. But if they practice hard, they'll get themselves in pretty good shape."
On the morning session of Thursday's two-a-day practice
"This morning, we didn't do any kicking game but it was a fast tempo. We tried to use the 40-second clock and make things as fast as we could. The coaches were yelling, screaming and getting after them. They had a hard time getting in and out of the huddle and getting plays. We really tried to pick up the tempo, and it showed this afternoon. We exhausted them this morning."
On the afternoon portion of practice
"They weren't half as good as they were this morning. Part of it is because this is our first double session and they're not used to going at that tempo. You can practice all you want all summer - and you need to in order to be ready for this kind of stuff - but you can't simulate this. You can't get hit. You can't fall on the ground. You can't do the reps all the time. You don't have coaches yelling at you. It's different. It's almost like you have to get calloused. And that's why you practice - to get calloused and get into playing shape."
On if he is pleased with where his team is at so far
"For the most part. I'm a little disappointed that we had a few guys go down. Some guys needed IVs. Some guys were pulling up a little bit. They need to continue to hydrate themselves so that they can practice. We've got a bunch of guys who are doing a good job, but we've got some guys who need to get mentally tougher."
On if anyone has caught his eye so far in camp
"There are a lot of guys. I'm really trying to keep an eye on some of the freshmen, and there are some freshmen that I like. (Kasey) Stelly, the fullback, he's a hitting fool. He'll knock you out. If you look at defense, I think that (linebacker Darryl) Farley's got a chance. I like (defensive lineman Casey) Blum; he's going to be in the rotation. (Cornerback Alex) Lauricella has been hurt, but the little I've seen of him I like. And the three offensive linemen (Harris Howard, Eric Jones and Rafael Vazquez), I think they've got a chance to be really good players."
