NEW ORLEANS - After holding two-a-days during two of the last three days, Tulane football returned to just one practice on Tuesday, holding a morning session at the New Orleans Saints Indoor Practice Facility on Airline Drive.

The Green Wave went through 19 periods, with a heavy focus on some situational football during their tenth practice of fall camp.

"I thought today was good," said Tulane football head coach Curtis Johnson. "Our emphasis was on two-minute drills. We did some very, very good stuff. I thought (redshirt freshman quarterback) Tanner (Lee) was outstanding in his drive. (He made) completion after completion."

Johnson praised the work of running backs Sherman Badie, Josh Rounds and Dontrell Hilliard, who all ran the ball exceptionally well during the day. The third-year head coach also highlighted his young receiving corps as having a special day of practice.

Tulane will return to the practice field on Wednesday for their second two-a-day practice of the week. The Green Wave will open the day with an 8:30 a.m. session at Newman School on Jefferson Ave. that is open to the media before returning to the Saints Indoor Practice Facility for an afternoon practice closed to the media at 3:30 p.m.

Tulane will kick off the 2014 season on Thursday, Aug. 28, when the Green Wave travel to Oklahoma to take on fellow American newcomer Tulsa at 7 p.m. on the CBS Sports Network before opening the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, Sept. 6, against Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. in the new, on-campus Yulman Stadium in front of a national audience on ESPNews.

TULANE FOOTBALL DAY FIVE PRACTICE NOTES

Play of the Day: Senior wide receiver Devin Boutte made a spectacular over-the-shoulder catch while falling in the corner of the end zone on a 35-yard strike from senior quarterback Nick Montana despite solid coverage from freshman cornerback Donnie Lewis, Jr.

Player of the Day: Sherman Badie. The redshirt-freshman made an array of dazzling catches over the middle throughout the day. However, the John Curtis Christian School product showed his skills running the ball, impressing his coaches, teammates and others watching practice. On one play in 11-on-11 drills, Badie took a handoff from Devin Powell and ran up the sideline 40 yards, using sheer speed to evade the entire defense on his way to a touchdown.

Quote of the Day: "You're running as slow as molasses in January!" ~ Offensive line coach John McDonnell to an offensive lineman during drill work.

Notes
Senior running back Dante Butler missed Tuesday's practice with an illness, but is expected to return to action on Wednesday.

It seems the kicking situation has whittled its way down to two players: freshman Andrew DiRocco and junior Steven Broccoli. DiRocco, a freshman from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has spent most of the time with the first unit, while Broccoli has had a strong showing with the second team.
