NEW ORLEANS -- Tulane Head Coach Chris Scelfo welcomed 13 scholarship players and six walk-ons to the Green Wave football program as newcomers reported to the James W. Wilson Jr. Center Tuesday.
After brief facilities tours, meetings with athletic administrators, photos and physicals, the group embarked for Covington, La., where the Green Wave will hold its preseason camp. Freshmen will work out twice each on Wednesday and Thursday at St. Paul's School in Covington before returning to Tulane Friday for an academic orientation day. Tulane's returning players report Friday.
"We've been waiting for this day since we signed this group back in February," Scelfo said. "It's great to have them here and we can't wait to get them on the practice field tomorrow. The first couple of days are always an adjustment for the freshmen, but that's why it's good to have this time before the varsity reports. It gives us a chance to take a look at them up close and see what they can do and how they can contribute."
The 13 scholarship freshmen include a trio of running backs, three linebackers, two wide receivers and two tight ends. Seven of the 13 are from Louisiana, they were joined by three players from Texas and one each from Florida, Georgia and California. All are freshmen except for Nick Simpson, a linebacker from Houston who transferred from Oklahoma.
Among the walk-ons reporting Tuesday were two local players -- Charles Duff, a defensive end from Rummel High in Metairie, and Lane Macaluso, a deep snapper from Brother Martin High in New Orleans.
