NEW ORLEANS - Tulane football's first fall camp under head football coach Curtis Johnson is in the books and the first-year skipper couldn't be happier following an intense two and half hour practice under hot and sunny conditions at the Westfeldt Practice Facility.

"It was wonderful today," Johnson said. "We got out here and we knew what we were doing. The guys ran around well. They did a great job of running around all day. We have to learn how to practice and know how to do what we are supposed to do. When we get to scrimmage, we will find out who the real football players are. I liked Josh Rounds today. He played well. Devin Powell threw the ball well. He made some throws that really wowed me. Ryan Griffin did well today as well. He did a good job getting us in and out of the huddles."

Today, the Green Wave donned helmets and shorts and went through a 16-period workout. TU will remain in shorts and helmets on Tuesday and will add shoulder pads for shells on Wednesday and Thursday. The Wave's first day in pads will be on Friday.

Tulane continues will fall camp with its second practice on Tuesday, Aug. 7 on campus at 8:30 a.m. The Wave's practices on campus are open to both the public and the media.

TU spent several sessions of today's practice focusing on the different special teams units and techniques and then worked quite extensively with team passing and 7-of-7 drills. Griffin, who is a three-year starter for the Wave, led the first unit today and looked very sharp with his passes. A trio of quarterbacks, including redshirt-freshmen Leon Blouin, Jr., and Jordy Joseph and true freshman Devin Powell also spent time under center.

The Green Wave secondary looked to be in season form with the number of deflections and interceptions the group came up with today, especially the group of newcomers, which included rookies Darion Monroe, Lorenzo Doss, Jordan Batiste and Kedrick Banks. Seasoned veterans Ryan Travis and Alex Lauricella also stood out during the passing drills.

The TU backfield is one of the deepest positions on the team with the returning group of Orleans Darkwa, Derrick Strozier, Robert Kelley, Dante Butler and Stephen Barnett mixing with a talented group of newcomers in Josh Rounds and Lazedrick Thompson. Today, the group split carries and stood out in both the running and receiving areas.

On the offensive line, junior Mike Henry took over for an injured Zach Morgan at center and seemed to make a seamless transition today with near-flawless execution during his reps.
