NEW ORLEANS- With the rookies arriving Tuesday, the Tulane football squad came together for the first time this fall as the veterans reported to camp on Wednesday. Among the student-athletes reporting were 16 returning starters, including eight on offense, six on defense and two special team members and 13 redshirt freshmen. Included among the 49 returning lettermen who reported to camp on Wednesday were seniors Andre Anderson (RB), who was recently named to the Doak Walker Award watch list, Jeremy Williams (WR), and linebackers Travis Burks and David Kirksey.
"We want to take what we have done this summer and keep building off of our work in camp," Kirksey said. "Everyone is working hard and we have a lot of guys coming back which will help us out but we're also excited about the freshmen. We've all had a chance to work together over the summer and we have a lot of guys who will contribute big things to the program."
While Wednesday marked the program's official camp report day, the majority of the veterans spent the summer on campus, attending summer classes, getting lifts in at the Henry Frnka Weight Room and participating in 7-on-7 drills with the first-year student-athletes, who also spent their summer on campus.
"It's exciting to see them back together," head coach Bob Toledo said of his veterans. "It appears from their looks that they have had a very productive summer."
Tulane opens its season on September 4 at the Louisiana Superdome in a nationally-televised game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on ESPN. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
The 2009 squad will suit up for the first official practice on Thursday, August 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Westfeldt Practice Facility on Tulane's campus. Media Day for the 2009 squad will be held on Saturday, August 8 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
