NEW ORLEANS- While the 25 newcomers to the Tulane football program may have been on campus for over a month now, today marked the start of football season in their minds, as preparations got underway for fall camp.
The first-year student-athletes were required to report to campus by Tuesday, though most of them have been on site getting workouts in while attending summer classes in an effort to ease the transition between high school and college. While the rookies have been living in summer quarters, Tuesday marked moving day for the student-athletes, as they made the transition into their fall dorms. Following the move, freshmen were fitted for football pads and equipment at the Wilson Center.
"The summer has been great," freshman Shakiel Smith said. "Today was moving day, which was tough. There were a lot of things to move, but we did it. We've all been working together this summer and I've put on seven pounds already so that's good. Tonight we have a team dinner which will be a good way to wrap-up the day. Hopefully I can continue to get to know my teammates even better than I do now."
Because of a NCAA rule change, freshmen are no longer prohibited from reporting to their college campus earlier in the summer, giving the incoming student-athletes a chance to get their feet wet in a collegiate atmosphere. Tulane's rookies have made the most of their summer, with each one having passed their first two college classes heading into fall camp. The freshmen have also had a chance to learn the offensive and defensive schemes over the summer with veteran players helping to integrate the freshman into the program.
The 25 rookies are joined by 65 returning squad members, including 49 letterwinners. Tulane opens its season on September 4 at the Louisiana Superdome in a nationally-televised game against the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on ESPN. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. Central Time.
The freshmen will suit up for their first official practice on Thursday, August 6 at 9:30 a.m. at the Westfeldt Practice Facility on Tulane's campus. Media Day for the 2009 squad will be held on Saturday, August 8 beginning at 11:00 a.m.
