NEW ORLEANS - Greg Davis, Jr., a six-year coaching veteran whose resume includes stops at North Carolina and Texas, has been named running backs coach at Tulane University, Head Coach Chris Scelfo announced Friday.
Davis comes to Tulane from Alabama A&M, where he coached the quarterbacks last season. He spent the 1998 season at the University of Texas working with the quarterbacks and kickers and was a graduate assistant at North Carolina for two seasons prior to that.
"We're all excited about the opportunity to have someone as knowledgeable and enthusiastic as Greg join our staff," Scelfo said. "He is someone who cares for his players on and off the field. Greg has a tremendous background, having been around football his whole life, and his local upbringing will be a tremendous asset to the Tulane family, the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana."
Davis brings a familiar name to the Tulane program as his father, Greg Davis, Sr., served as the Green Wave head coach from 1988-91 and is currently the offensive coordinator at Texas.
Davis, Jr. graduated from Grace King High School in Metairie in 1989 before entering Nicholls State University, where he was a student assistant coach for the Colonels. Upon graduating from NSU in 1994, he went to Southeast Missouri State University, where he spent two years coaching the wide receivers and kickers.
"This is a dream job for me," Davis said. "Tulane is one of the finest universities in the country and I am excited to be returning to New Orleans, where I grew up, and to be joining Chris Scelfo's staff."
Davis succeeds Joe Dickinson, who resigned to enter private business in his home state of Oklahoma.
"I am deeply sorry Joe Dickinson resigned from Tulane University, but family has always been his number one priority and that is why I wanted him in our family," Scelfo said. "As a close personal friend of Joe's, I will miss him deeply, but I am excited we were able to attract someone of Greg Davis, Jr.'s caliber."
In addition to Davis' appointment to the staff, Scelfo announced Friday that defensive line coach Giff Smith will take on additional duties as recruiting coordinator for the Green Wave.
