Senior Cairo Santos was tabbed to the All C-USA Preseason First Team and named the 2013 C-USA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.
July 17, 2013
New Orleans - Tulane senior placekicker Cairo Santos has been named the 2013 Conference USA Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, and the Green Wave trio of Santos, senior wide receiver Ryan Grant and sophomore cornerback Lorenzo Doss were each selected to the All C-USA Preseason First Team, as it was announced today by the C-USA office following vote by the league's head coaches.
Tulane's three selections tied Rice for the fourth-most by one team, but the Green Wave and Tulsa were the only two schools to place a player on offense, defense and special teams.
Santos won the 2012 Lou Groza Award with the first 21-for-21 field goal season in FBS history and was named a consensus All-American after leading the team in points scored (89) and hitting 26-of-27 on PATs. He was 12-for-12 from 40-plus yards, including 2-for-2 from 50-plus yards. Santos, who was selected to the 2013 Lou Groza Award Watch List, connected on a then-school record 54 yarder vs. ULM on Sept. 29 before eclipsing that with a 57-yard boot vs. Rice on Nov. 3.
A native of Brazilia, Brazil, Santos claimed first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, Football Writers Associated of America, Sports Illustrated and Phil Steele Publications while garnering first-team All C-USA and All-Louisiana recognition. Santos tied an NCAA Division I record in field goal percentage while becoming just the second player in DI-FBS to finish perfect with 20-plus field goal attempts.
Grant, who was named to the 2013 Biletnikoff Award Preseason Watch List on Tuesday, is one of 22 returning Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) wide receivers to compile 1,000 yards last season. As a redshirt-junior in 2012, the Beaumont, Texas native, claimed first-team All-Conference USA honors by the league office and Phil Steele Publications, as well as second-team All-Louisiana, after leading the team with 76 catches, 1,149 receiving and all-purpose yards, and six touchdown grabs. He paced C-USA and sat 16th nationally in receiving yards per game (95.75) and his yardage total ranks fifth in Tulane single-season history.
Grant enters his final collegiate season ranking sixth in Tulane history with nine 100-yard receiving games, eighth with 14.54 yards per catch, 11th with 1,730 receiving yards and 13th with 12 touchdown catches.
A native New Orleanian, Doss played in all 12 games with nine starts last season as a true freshman and claimed C-USA All-Freshman and honorable-mention All C-USA honors. He led the team with five interceptions - the most ever by a Tulane freshman and a number which ranks seventh in Green Wave single-season history - while finishing tied for second with a fumble recovery, seventh with 44 tackles (33 solo, 11 assists) and tied for seventh with a pair of pass break-ups.
He ranked tied for second in the conference and tied for 13th with 0.42 interceptions per game, and was named Louisiana co-Defensive Player of the Week after picking off a pair of passes and tallying a career-high six tackles (3 solo, 3 assists) vs. UAB on Oct. 27.
The Green Wave opens the 2013 campaign on Friday, Aug. 29, when its hosts to Jackson State at 7 p.m. in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
