Overall thoughts on how practice went
"We scrimmaged quite a bit today. It's really our last scrimmage day until Saturday and we really don't scrimmage all that much. Today, we scrimmaged kicking, kickoff and kickoff return, we scrimmaged live punt and punt return to try and evaluate some personnel and schemes, and then we did some situations. We worked on normal downs like first-and-10. We told the offense they have to make four or more yards, and defensively, you have to hold them to three yards or less. We did some third-down situations. Of course as an offense, you have to convert so you maintain possession, and defensively you have to get off the field. Defensively, we had two interceptions, one of which was run back for a touchdown, and we had a sack. It was pretty even in that sense."
On the red zone and coming-out drills
"We went down to the red zone and did some red zone scrimmaging. I think the offense kind of got the defense in that situation. We were very good defensively in that area last year, and offensively we weren't. Maybe we're getting better there offensively. Then we did our coming-out offense. During the season, there will come a time when you're on your one-yard line and you've got to get out offensively so you can punt and not be on the end line and try and make a first down. Defensively, you've got to stop them and hold them there for a punt so that the offense gets good field position. We did a lot of situations. We evaluated a bunch of people. We've got some people nicked up right now that didn't' scrimmage but who will hopefully will be ready to go by Saturday. Then we'll be done, we'll evaluate the whole spring and get ready for the fall."
On the performance of J.T. McDonald and Stephen Barnett on Wednesday
"Both of them really did a nice job. They ran with power and they made plus yards. Williams didn't scrimmage today because he's got turf toe and we had a walk-on play some today. The running backs are doing a nice job. We did some two-back stuff, Stelly did some nice blocking from fullback so from a running back position, I feel good. It's probably going to be more running back by committee next year rather than one horse running the race. With the guys that we have and the freshmen that we have coming in, I feel confident that we have a good group of players there."
On the schedule for the rest of the week
"Tomorrow, we'll look at some practice film, lift weights and basically try and keep them off their feet for a bit. Friday, we'll practice in just helmets, shorten the practice periods, we'll work a little bit on our two-minute drill on offense and defense, and we'll review some things and try to address that. Then on Saturday is our scrimmage. I hate to say it's going to be a big scrimmage because we've got a lot of guys nicked up, but we hope to practice for about an hour - sometime around 9:30 or 9:45 with some drills and that type of thing to get better. Then we'll practice from about 11-12 in a scrimmage situation so that some of our fans can watch the team play."
