NEW ORLEANS - Intensity, passion and physical play dominated practice Monday for the Tulane University football team as it returned to the field after its first scrimmage of the spring on Saturday.
"It was a very intense, physical, demanding practice," said Tulane head coach Bob Toledo. "Our guys are tired. They're beat up and banged up a little bit, and we're trying to push them through it and make them mentally tougher."
Emotions ran high throughout practice, especially in the trenches of the offensive and defensive lines. Several players yelled and cheered for their side of the ball and encouraged their teammates throughout practice. Toledo said the intensity between players and the emotion shown throughout the practice was a good thing.
"That's what you want because this game is based on emotion," Toledo said. "You've got to play with intensity and passion and emotion, and that's what we're trying to get them to do. They've got to come out and bust their fannies."
The team part took in the usual individual, 7-on-7 and team periods, and also practiced third down and red zone situations. Senior quarterback Scott Elliott threw 15 passes and completed seven, including an interception, sophomore Kevin Moore was 10-for-13 on the day with an interception, and redshirt freshman Joe Kemp went 11-for-15 with three touchdowns, including one during red zone drills.
The offensive play of the day was a screen pass from Kemp to junior running back André Anderson that saw Anderson shift his way through and then run away from the defense for a touchdown.
