New Orleans - Tulane head football coach Curtis Johnson officially announced today the addition of Aaron Price as the Green Wave's new quarterbacks coach and the promotion of Kwahn Drake to defensive line coach, and Johnson has also shuffled several coaching duties.
Along with the addition of Price and Drake, Johnson has moved co-defensive coordinator Jon Sumrall to linebackers coach, while secondary coach Jason Rollins will now serve as the special teams coordinator and offensive line coach John McDonell will be the run-game coordinator.
"We have hired Aaron Price as our quarterbacks coach and elevated our former graduate assistant coach, Kwahn Drake, to our defensive line coach position," Johnson said. "Aaron is a proven quarterbacks coach and spent last year with us as a consultant. His experience will be a valuable asset to our group of quarterbacks.
"Kwahn is from the area and went to college at a state school, and has not only become a young, upcoming coach in our profession, but has quickly proven his ability to recruit locally."
In the recruiting department, wide receivers coach Keith Williams will oversee out-of-state recruiting and running backs/tight ends coach David Johnson will spearhead the in-state recruiting for the Green Wave.
"Recruiting will always be the top priority of our program off the field. We have adjusted our staff responsibilities in an effort to be as efficient as possible, both in and out of the state, at finding the top recruits for our program," Johnson said.
Price, 43, brings 18 years of experience on the offensive side of the ball to Tulane. He most recently spent nine years at UTEP working for his father, legendary head coach Mike Price, from 2004-12. The younger Price was the Miners' offensive coordinator in his final five seasons and served as the quarterbacks and kickers coach from 2004-06, and wide receivers and kickers coach in 2007.
In all, Price spent 14 years working with his father and he also played for Mike Price at Washington State from 1991-93. Aaron Price has been a part of seven bowl teams as a coach or player, including three at UTEP and four at Washington State.
Drake, 28, is a native of Marrero, La., and spent the last two seasons as a graduate assistant coach on the Tulane staff and worked primarily with the Green Wave defense. This past season, Drake assisted a defensive unit that ranked 22nd in the nation in total defense, 17th against the rush and 18th in scoring. The Wave defenders ranked second nationally in turnovers gained with 35.
