New Orleans - The Tulane football team reached the midway point of the 2014 spring football schedule today following a little over two-hour practice at the Saints Indoor Practice Facility in Metairie.
While today's weather provided the best day so far in the Crescent City in 2014, Tulane remained indoors for its seventh practice and the warm weather proved to be the catalyst for what turned out to be one of the post spirited and productive practices of the spring.
"We finally had some nice weather and even though we were indoors I thought lifted our spirits because we ran around and practiced very well," Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said. "Coming off the scrimmage from last Saturday, I kind of thought we might be a little lethargic but we looked good.
"At the halfway point of spring practice, I believe we are right where we need to be. Everyone is familiar with what we have installed on both offense and defense. Now, we will go back to practice one and start over. That way, everyone should be very comfortable with what we are trying to do."
Today, the Green Wave focused primarily on passing drills and all four quarterbacks earned equal time under the watchful eye of Johnson, who has repeatedly stated the quarterback position is one several that are open competitions during the spring. The foursome of senior Nick Montana, junior Jordy Joseph, redshirt sophomore Devin Powell, redshirt freshman Tanner Lee combined to complete 76.2 percent (16-of-21) of their pass attempts for 174 and one touchdown during last Saturday's 37-play controlled scrimmage.
Tulane also mixed in some special teams, including punt, PAT and FG and several situational plays.
A pair of freshmen newcomers for the spring season has decided to alter their names on the team roster. Receiver Niguel Veal will now be Teddy Veal, while center Raul Diaz, Jr., will now appear as Junior Diaz.
Even though he is not participating in spring drills with the team, two-sport athlete Richard Carthon, a sophomore outfield for the Green Wave team, helped Tulane to a 4-0 start this past weekend with wins over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Carthon, a safety who led the Wave in special teams tackles last fall, went 5-for-14 (.357) at the plate with a triple and three RBI. He had two multi-hit games over the weekend, going 2-for-3 on opening day and 3-for-4 during Sunday's contest.
The Green Wave returns to the Saints Practice Facility on Wednesday, Feb. 17 for practice No. 8.
