Green Wave head coach Curtis Johnson discusses Tulane's signing class on Wednesday during the annual National Signing Day Press Conference in the James W. Wilson, Jr., Center.
Feb. 5, 2014
NEW ORLEANS - After enjoying a 2013 season which saw the Green Wave post seven victories and earn a bowl bid for the first time in over a decade, the Tulane University football team added some firepower with a local flavor on Wednesday as head coach Curtis Johnson announced the reception of 24 National Letters-of-Intent on the NCAA's National Signing Day.
Twenty of the signees are from the state of Louisiana, including 12 from the Greater New Orleans Area, highlight the incoming class. The remainder of the unit consists of three student-athletes from Florida and one from Georgia. In addition to center Raul Diaz (Miami, Fla./Miami Central HS) and athlete Niguel Veal (Harvey, La./West Jefferson HS), who both enrolled at Tulane at the start of the 2014 spring semester, Tulane signed nine offensive players (four tight ends, two linemen, one quarterback, one running back and one wide receiver), 11 defensive standouts, one kicker and an athlete.
"It's been a very exciting year for us, and today is a very exciting day," Johnson said. "This is one of our biggest gifts. There is no way we should have gotten these kids that we got. Last year's class was a miracle class. This class is beyond that. This class is just awesome.
"This is by far the best class that we've had, and you can tell by the schools that we had to recruit against. I would say that we weren't always recruiting against the big Top 10 schools, but some of them did come in at the end and our guys held steady."
Headlining the list of Tulane signees are 12 student-athletes who received three-star status from the various recruiting services, 13 that ranked among the Top 100 recruits in their respective states and 20 that ranked among the best at their positions nationally.
Four players on the singing list were prep teammates as the Green Wave signed Belle Chasse High wide receiver Terren Encalade and linebacker Robert Kennedy as well as a pair St. Augustine High products in tight end Charles Jones and Peter Woullard.
Other offensive signees were quarterback Glen Cuiellette (Mandeville, La./Mandeville HS), running back Dontrell Hilliard (Baton Rouge, La./Scotlandville HS), tight ends Kendall Ardoin (Ville Platte, La./Ville Platte HS), Trey Scott (Powder Springs, Ga./McEachern HS) and Deondre Skinner (Patterson, La./Patterson HS), and offensive linemen Devon Johnson (Amite, La./Amit HS) and John Leglue (Alexandria, La./Holy Savior Menard Central HS).
On defense, Tulane added linebackers Eric Bowie (Monroe, La./Ouachita Parish HS), Rene Fleury (New Orleans, La./McDonogh 35), Zachery Harris (New Orleans, La./Holy Cross HS) and Rae Juan Marbley (Destrehan, La./Destrehan HS), defensive linemen Braynon Edwards (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep), Daren Williams (Reserve, La./East St. John HS) and Sean Wilson (Port Sulphur, La./South Plaquemines HS), and defensive backs Donnie Lewis, Jr. (Baton Rouge, La./Central HS) and Stephon Lofton (New Orleans, La./Miller-McCoy HS).
