TULANE HEAD COACH Curtis Johnson

Opening Statement...
"Negative yardage plays really hurt us. You can't have penalties, you can't have timely missed assignments. This has really hurt us all year, but it really reared its ugly head today."

On the play of the defense...
"I thought they were sensational. I thought Nico (Marley) played well. I thought (Derrick) Strozier played well, as did (Jordan) Batiste. That whole secondary did their job. I thought the front played well also. The one thing they did was get those big guys up front off our linebackers and our safeties. The defense just played well."

On the receivers...
"(The drop on the final drive) was very untimely. I think that was one of the things were we really need to adjust. It was one of the things that we really worked on this week. My hat goes off to Rice. They did a great job with what they have. Those defensive backs covered us well."

On the first half...
"It was very frustrating. I felt sorry for (offensive coordinator) Eric (Price). What do you call? That was one of our issues. We'll adjust that."

On coming up behind at the end...
"I just think we started so slow, and we had to play faster. Our offense needs a sense of urgency."

On deciding to go for it on fourth down during the last drive of the game from Rice's endzone...
"We weren't going to punt. We were going to go for it, but we just didn't have the play that we wanted. When we got the play called, the guy was open."

On today's breakdowns...
"They were everywhere. This time of year, we need to be clicking a little bit. I think part of that is because our quarterback was out for some time, throwing off our rhythm. But we'll get better for the next game."

On not playing Devin Powell...
"I thought Nick (Montana) was handling everything better. Devin will get a chance to play again."

TULANE QUARTERBACK Nick Montana

On the second half play...
"We just settled down and started to run a lot of stuff that I was comfortable with. We started making plays. People started stepping up."

On the final offensive play of the game...
"I set up and the ball did not come out of my hand the way I wanted it to. It's killing me that I didn't make that throw. I pride myself on making throws like that."

On not getting a first down until the third quarter...
"That's the one positive really. We wasted two quarters doing nothing, but (we were still in the game)."

TULANE DEFENSIVE TACKLE Chris Davenport

On the team's defensive play on the day...
"Early in the week, we had to put this game on our back. It's not about what the offense does, it's about what the defense can control. Our job is to go out there and stop people and convert three-and-outs and make turnovers. I think one thing we did tonight was stop this team on the ground. They rushed for 250 yards a game, and we held them to 150 yards. That's a great compliment to this defense. The Rice quarterback came and told Sam Scofield after the game that we were the best defense they've played all year. I think this was a tough matchup for him. They are a great offense. We just played a hard-fought game, and we came up on the wrong end."
