Sept. 15, 2007
Recap | Final Stats | Quotes
Houston 34, Tulane 10 Today's game marked the 13th all-time meeting between the two teams, and the fifth time the squads have battled at the Louisiana Superdome. Tulane's 34-10 loss to the Cougars drops the Green Wave's series record vs. Houston to 4-9, including a 2-3 mark in the Dome. Tulane is now 5-6 in Conference USA openers since the league's inception prior to the 1996 season. Junior free safety David Skehan picked off a pair of passes for the Green Wave, marking the first time at Tulane player had a multiple-interception game since Tra Boger snared a pair of interceptions against Marshall in a game played in Mobile, Ala., on Oct. 29, 2005. Skehan now has six career interceptions, five of which have come against Conference USA opponents. With Skehans interceptions and a fumble recovery by senior safety Joe Goosby tonight against Houston, combined with a pair of turnovers last week vs. Mississippi State, the Tulane defense has now forced five turnovers during the 2007 season. Last year, the Green Wave forced a total of 14 turnovers. At their current rate, Tulane is on pace to force 29 turnovers. Tulane's three forced turnover were the most since last Nov. 4 when the Green Wave had a fumble recovery and two interceptions in a 10-9 win over Conference USA foe UCF. Junior linebacker Evan Lee has a career high in tackles against the Cougars with 12 stops on the night (eight solo, four assists). His previous career high was nine set last season at UTEP (10/14/06). It marked the second time in as many weeks that a Tulane linebacker posted a career high and double-digit tackle totals as junior linebacker James Dillard had 16 stops last week against Mississippi State.
Senior running back Matt Forté rushed for 85 yards on 17 carries, which gives him 2,270 for his career. He remains in sixth place on the Tulane career rushing list, ahead of Marvin Christian, who had 2,152 yards on the ground from 1977-79. Forté is now 14 yards to catch Jamaican Dartez (2,284 from 1995-98) for fifth place all-time. With a 40-yard reception from Scott Elliott on the Green Wave's second drive of the day, sophomore wide receiver Jeremy Williams has now caught at least one pass in every game he has played in. He had at least one grab in all 11 games he played in as a redshirt-freshman in 2006, and had at least one grab in both games Tulane has played this year. The lone game Williams did not play in during his career was last year's Auburn game, which he missed due to injury. Redshirt-freshman Casey Robottom's debut as a wide receiver proved to be an impressive one as the native of LaPlace, La., hauled in four passes for 115 yards. Robottom, who saw time last week as a punt returner, showed the knack for making the big play with a 42-yard reception from Scott Elliott in the second quarter and a 41-yard catch from Kevin Moore in the fourth. His receiving yardage was the most by a Tulane rookie wideout since Robert Griffin had 126 vs. Air Force on Oct. 18, 1980. Saturday's game marked the collegiate debut of a pair of Tulane freshman. True freshman fullback Jordan Stephany was a member of the Green Wave's kickoff return team and got his first career carry - a three-yard gain - in the third quarter. Also seeing his first action was redshirt-freshman quarterback Kevin Moore, who called the signals for the Green Wave's final two offensive drives. Moore completed 4-of-10 pass for 66 yards, including a six-yard touchdown strike to Chris Dunn with 1:36 left in the ballgame. Junior defensive lineman Antonio Harris started his 36th consecutive game, the longest such streak on the Green Wave team. |
