GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - David Garrard threw two long scoring passes in the second half and ran for 112 yards as East Carolina beat Tulane 37-17 on Saturday.
Garrard hit Arnie Powell with a 42-yard scoring strike with 2:14 left in the third quarter to give the Pirates (2-1, 1-0 Conference USA) a 23-14 lead.
Garrard, who finished 10-for-27 for 185 yards, added a 59-yard TD pass to Torey Morris on the first play of the fourth quarter.
After Tulane (0-2, 0-1) kicked a field goal, Pirates backup Richard Alston threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Derek Collins to make it 37-17.
Tulane's J.P. Losman threw a 6-yard TD pass to Kerwin Cook midway through the first quarter. The Green Wave moved deep into Pirates territory again on their next drive, but East Carolina nose guard Mbayo Ahmadu recovered Losman's fumble.
East Carolina tied it early in the second quarter on Garrard's 6-yard touchdown run.
The teams traded touchdowns to close out the half, but Kevin Miller missed an extra point and Tulane went to the locker room with a 14-13 lead.
Losman was 20-of-35 for 299 yards and two touchdowns.
