Tulane 24, Louisiana Tech 15
Tulane Game 3
Joe Aillet Stadium
Head Coach Curtis Johnson
"Tonight's win wasn't pretty at all, but a win is a win. We turned the ball over and gave them a lot of opportunities. I thought our defense played outstanding after last week, which was a big-time wake-up call. Our offense came around when we had to and we came from behind on the road. This is a big win for our program."
On the job his defense did against the Bulldogs
"The defense was very good on third down tonight and did an excellent job of putting pressure on the quarterbacks. I thought Coach (Skip) Holtz had his guys ready for this game, but fortunately we were able to come out on top. It was a hard-fought game by both teams."
On what a win like this does for his team
"A win like this gives us a little more confidence. These players are ready to win now, even though we're a pretty young team. Going on the road and winning is a great way to gain confidence, but we need to enjoy tonight, work on our mistakes and carry our momentum into next week's game."
On if the game was closer than it should have been
"Here's what happened, sometimes you're going to have games like that. Sometimes you're going to have some miscues, sometimes you're going to make some big mistakes. We made a lot of mistakes, but I think we're getting better, we addressed the defense, and it got better. We're going to address the turnovers and get better next week, and hopefully come back next week with a victory."
On the performance of Rob Kelley
"Oh yeah, monster night. Rod's been playing well all this time since we've been here. He's one of the main-state guys that, and I thought Orleans played well also. Those guys carried us at the end of the game."
On if the defense picked things up once Tech's starting quarterback left the game
"Anytime you knock the starter out of the game, you're going to play well against the guy who hasn't taken as many snaps. That quarterback was very capable and had some nice long runs, so he played well also."
On Cairo Santos' field goal
"Cairo is one of those guys who is very very consistent. I wish our whole team was as consistent as Cairo because he's consistent. He said he could make it and he did."
Senior PK Cairo Santos
On extending his field goals made streak to 25
"Pete (Picerelli) is becoming a very good holder for us. He did a good job of putting the ball down in the right spot, so I followed through without having to worry about the snap. The ball popped up with a slight curve with the way I followed through. But when I looked and saw the ball going straight I started celebrating. I am just happy for us to get the win."
Junior FB Rob Kelley
Overall thoughts on the win
"I think this victory is a pretty defining moment in our season. We fought hard and stayed in the game despite our turnovers and were able to come up with a big road win. We weren't as focused on the running game coming in but we just wanted to make some plays for the team and it took care of itself."
Sophomore CB Lorenzo Doss
On the way the defense played tonight
"We knew we had to start fast tonight. That was one of our main goals. We knew if we could start fast, we could give our offense the ball so they could score. We didn't want to give up any big plays over the top early on. We were able to stop their big plays most of the night and create turnovers."
On his third-quarter interception
"We were in man-to-man coverage and I played the receiver like he was going to be overthrown or to his back shoulder. I was on the outside and felt the back shoulder and got the ball. I caught it and looked to score. My teammates blocked well for me but I sort of ran out of gas."
