Wide receivers coach Trooper Taylor begins his fifth year with the Green Wave in 2003. The personable coach draws on his family experiences as one of 16 children to turn his wide receivers into his family, each of whom are challenged to do their best both on the field and off. During his tenure, Tulane receivers have been a vital part of the record-setting offense. Under Taylor's direction, Terrell Harris and Roydell Williams both moved onto the Tulane career charts. Willams, who earned all-league recognition in 2001, was injured last year, snapping a five-year streak in which Green Wave receivers received all-league honors.
Taylor's 2001 receiving corps included the No. 1 receiving "trio" in the nation as Adrian Burnette, Kerwin Cook and Harris led the country with 2,384 receiving yards on 185 catches and Burnette was the nation's leader in touchdown catches. In 1999, Burnette and JaJuan Dawson were the only Division I-A receiving tandem to each gain over 1,000 yards. During his tenure, four Tulane wide receivers have signed to play in the National Football League, including 2002 free agent signee Harris (Carolina Panthers). Cook and Dawson are in the NFL with the New Orleans Saints and Houston Texans, respectively. Burnette was on the active roster of the Dallas Cowboys in 2001.
A 1992 graduate of Baylor, Taylor was a standout kick returner for the Bears. Upon completing his eligibility, he held the school record for career kickoff returns (53) and return yardage (1,063). He still ranks second in both categories. Also a solid defensive back for the Bears, Taylor made a game-saving tackle against Texas to secure a trip to the Copper Bowl in 1991. After earning his degree, the Cuero, Texas, native joined the Bears coaching staff, serving two seasons as a graduate assistant. In 1994, he became the BU wide receivers coach. He moved over to coach the Baylor secondary for two seasons (1995-96) before returning to guide the receivers in 1997.
He left his alma mater following the '97 campaign to coach at New Mexico for one season.
