Brad Smiley

In his seventh year as a member of the Tulane coaching staff, Louisiana native Brad Smiley is in his second season as the Green Wave's recruiting coordinator. Smiley has coached the Green Wave tight ends for the past four seasons after two years as the graduate assistant for the Tulane offense.

In his role as recruiting coordinator, Smiley has instituted a modernized, computerized system designed to make the recruiting process easier for prospects and coaches in 2006. Smiley's 2006 tight end group features fifth-year senior Jerome Landry along with versatile junior Gabe Ratcliff and sophomore Justin Kessler.

In addition to coaching the tight ends and serving as recruiting coordinator, Smiley also assists in coaching the fullbacks, works with the offensive line and is in charge of several of the Green Wave special teams units.

Prior to his arrival in New Orleans, Smiley spent two seasons at Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, where he coached the offensive line and tight ends and was part of the 1999 Southwestern Junior College football conference and Red River Bowl championship team. The offense won the league rushing titles in 1998 and '99, and ranked in the top 10 nationally in rushing both seasons. Smiley coached seven all-conference players and two All-Americans at TVCC.

In 1996 and 1997, Smiley coached tight ends at Northwestern State University. He helped NSU's 1997 team to the Southland Conference championship and a berth in the NCAA I-AA playoffs. One of his charges, Damian Johnson, participated in the 1999 Blue-Gray All-Star Game and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.

While completing his undergraduate studies at Baylor, Smiley served as a student assistant coach for the Bears. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing from Baylor in 1995 and completed his master's degree in education at NSU in 1997.

Smiley's grandfather, the late Bob Smiley, was the head basketball and assistant football coach at Slippery Rock (Pa.) University while his grandmother, Betty, was the head women's basketball coach at Clarion (Pa.) University.

Smiley and his wife, the former Janna Clary of Natchit-oches, La., are the parents of a son, Benjamin Andrew (3) and a daughter, Clary Ann (1).
