Preparing for his fourth season despite undergoing multiple knee surgeries during his time at Tulane. Practice time is limited as coaching staff conserves his health for games.
2005: Played in all 11 games, and started the final nine of the year at defensive end. Recorded 21 tackles, including 17 solo stops. Registered a season-high five tackles, four solo, against Houston (10/8), with a tackle for loss. Recorded a big sack against Southeastern Louisiana (10/1), forcing a fumble 12 yards behind the line of scrimmage. Notched four tackles in the Southern Miss game (11/26).
2004: Despite battling knee injuries, played in all 11 games, registering 33 tackles, 15 solo, and a team-best nine tackles for loss. Recorded a season-best six tackles while also forcing a fumble against Florida A&M (9/11). Added five tackles versus Houston (10/30). Tallied a half-sack against Southern Miss (9/25) and a full sack in the Louisville game (12/4). Had four tackles with two tackles for loss against both East Carolina (10/9) and Army (11/6).
2003: Injured his knee during preseason, but made his collegiate debut against Houston (10/11). Played in six games with four starts at defensive end. Finished the year with 28 tackles, 14 solo. Notched a career-best seven tackles, five solo, against Navy (11/1). Also had six tackles against both Memphis (10/25) and Southern Miss (11/15). Registered a tackle for loss in each of the final three games of the year. Recovered a fumble in the win over UAB (11/8).
2002: Redshirted the season.
HIGH SCHOOL: An All-Central Texas selection his senior year. Also earned first team all-district honors. Made 85 tackles and tallied five quarterback sacks as a senior. Recorded 25 tackles in just four games his junior season. Prep career totals include 110 tackles and five sacks. Led his team to playoff appearances in his last two seasons. Also participated in powerlifting, baseball and track. Won the regional powerlifting championship and set the school record in the squat, the deadlift and the power clean. Member of the A&B Honor Roll and the National Honor Society.
PERSONAL: Full name is James Michael Purcell. Born August 2, 1983, in Austin, Texas. The son of Chuck and Susan Purcell. An honor student and listed in "Who's Who Among American High School Students." A finance major at Tulane. Earned C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll recognition in each of the last three years.
