A successful coach at the high school and collegiate level, Pete McGinnis returns for his third season as Tulane's defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach.

McGinnis' top two linebackers both signed NFL free agent contracts following the 2000 season. Jerry Phillips, who led the Green Wave with 104 tackles and earned All-Conference USA honors, signed with the New York Giants. Meanwhile, Noel Ellis who played in the Kelly Tires Blue-Gray Classic and the Tyco Gridiron Classic, was inked to a contract by the San Francisco 49ers.

McGinnis spent three seasons at Oklahoma prior to his move to Tulane, serving as the Sooners' special teams coordinator (1997-98) and linebackers mentor (1996-97).

Prior to his tenure in Norman, McGinnis spent four years as the assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Arkansas State (1992-95).

A native of Duluth, Ga., McGinnis worked at Tulsa for five years. He tutored the Golden Hurricane running backs (1987) and inside linebackers (1988) before taking over as defensive coordinator (1989-91). For two years of his tenure at Tulsa, the Director of Athletics was current Tulane A.D. Rick Dickson.

McGinnis helped Tulsa make appearances in the 1989 Independence Bowl and the 1991 Freedom Bowl.

A 1977 graduate of Jacksonville State, McGinnis began his coaching career in 1976 as an assistant at Jacksonville (Ala.) High School. After 10 years working in the prep ranks, McGinnis made the move to the collegiate ranks in 1986, joining the staff at Alabama as a graduate assistant. He spent one season with the Crimson Tide before moving on to Tulsa.

McGinnis and his wife, Roberta, have three daughters, Katie (21), Marcy (19) and Liane (17).
