A candidate for the Ray Guy Award as the top punter in the nation. Despite missing the final two games of 2005 following a hunting accident, participated in spring drills and is expected to be at full strength for 2006. Current career punting average of 42.44 ranks second all-time at Tulane. Also ranks sixth in career punting yardage (7,214) and tied for seventh in punts (170). Also serves as the holder on all placekicks. A preseason All-Conference USA selection by Street & Smith's Magazine.
2005: Averaged 40.9 yards per punt with 53 punts for 2,166 yards. Ranked fifth in C-USA in punting average. Had 15 punts downed inside the 20 and just five touchbacks. Missed the final two games of the season after suffering a gunshot wound in a hunting accident (11/13). Still chosen honorable mention All-Louisiana. Averaged 43.26 yards per punt over his final four games of the year, including a season-best punting average of 48.0 yards (5-240) against Navy (11/5). Also had "short" punts of 21, 24, 31 and 35 yards which were downed inside the 12-yard line during the season. Had a season-long 54-yard punt against Rice (11/12) and added 53-yarders against Houston, UTEP, UCF and Navy. Had three punts downed inside the 20 against both Mississippi State (9/17) and Marshall (10/29). Threw a pair of passes out of punt formation, completing a 27-yard toss in the season opener.
2004: A first team All-Conference USA selection and second team All-Louisiana pick. The top punter in C-USA with an average of 42.67 yards per punt, 23rd in the nation. Punted 52 times for 2,219 yards. Saw 18 punts downed inside the 20-yard line and seven inside the 10. None of his first 42 punts went into the end zone and ended the season with just two touchbacks, both on a windy day at TCU. Booted 13 punts of 50-plus yards, including a pair of season-long 55-yarders (vs. Houston, and Navy). Punted three times for a season-high 47.7 average vs. UAB. At Houston, had four punts downed inside the 20 and two inside the five while averaging 43.5 yards per kick. At Memphis, punted seven times for a 41.4 average with two punts downed inside the five. Averaged 43.3 yards on seven punts at ECU with a pair of 50-yarders and two more inside the 20. Pinned USM inside its 15-yard line three times while two punts versus FAMU were downed at the seven and the one. Punted seven times for a 43.7-yard average versus Mississippi State, with a pair of 50-plus yard boots.
2003: Earned honorable mention Freshman All-America honors from Rivals.com. Also selected second team All-Conference USA. Ranked second in C-USA in punting with a 43.5 average and had 17 of his 65 kicks downed inside the 20. In the last six games of the season, averaged 45.9 yards per punt on 35 kicks. Set a Superdome record (college or pro) with a career-long 73-yard blast to the one-yard line versus East Carolina (11/22). Broke the school record for single-game punting average versus ECU with a 54.6-yard average on five kicks. Less than half (28) of his 65 punts were returned and 10 more were fair caught. Booted 16 punts of 50 yards or longer during the year.
2002: Redshirted the season.
HIGH SCHOOL: A three-time all-state selection as a punter, including second team honors as a sophomore and senior. Averaged 41 yards per punt with a long of 68 yards as a senior. Named to the Ray Guy Talent Scout List. Also saw action at quarterback for Coach John McCrory's Chargers. A three-time all-conference selection in baseball as a first baseman. Collected all-league honors as a left-handed pitcher as a senior when he posted a 9-1 record.
PERSONAL: Full name is Christopher Robert Beckman. Born October 1, 1983, in Atlanta, Texas. The son of Robert and Pam Beckman. A member of the National Honor Society in high school. Majoring in psychology.
