2000: Played in 10 games, posting a total of 11 tackles. A member of several of the Green Waves special teams units. Posted three tackles each against Southern Miss (10/14) and Houston (11/4).
1999: Played in nine games, starting six of those. Totaled 49 tackles, 39 of them unassisted, including a career-high nine against East Carolina (10/23). Snagged interceptions against SMU (9/11) and Houston (11/6). Missed the final two games of the season due to injury.
1998: Member of the Conference USA All-Freshman team. Played in 11 games. Started Liberty Bowl against BYU and regular-season finale against Louisiana Tech at free safety. Finished season with 33 tackles, including 21 solos. Named Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week after making 21 tackles (11 solos, 10 assists) off the bench against Houston. Had three solo tackles against Southwestern Louisiana. Played first part of season mostly on special teams.
1997: Redshirted his rookie season.
HIGH SCHOOL: A 1997 graduate of St. James High School in St. James, La., where he played for Coach Rick Gaille. A three-year starter and two-time all-district selection for St. James club that reached Class 3A championship game in 1996 and 1994. Named to coaches' all-state team as a senior, when he had 49 tackles (38 unassisted), an interception and 10 pass breakups. Also lettered in basketball for four years.
PERSONAL: Meldon M. Barnes, Jr. Born July 18, 1979 in Thibodaux, La. The son of Mathilda Barnes and Meldon Barnes, Sr. Majoring in media arts.
