Former Nicholls State head coach Darren Barbier enters his first season as a Green Wave assistant. Barbier coaches the Tulane defensive backs.

Barbier spent four years as head coach of the I-AA Colonels, taking Nicholls from an 0-11 record in 1995 to a berth in the I-AA playoffs in 1996. For his efforts, Barbier was given the Eddie Robinson Award as the I-AA National Coach of the Year.

Prior to working at Nicholls, Barbier spent six seasons as head coach at Hahnville (La.) High School, where he led the Tigers to a 15-0 record and the Class 5A state title in 1994.

In six seasons at the St. Charles Parish school, Barbier's teams were 64-12 (.842), captured two state championships and four straight district titles.

In 1992, Barbier was named the state Coach of the Year after guiding Hahnville to a 15-0 season. The Marrero native was also selected the Louisiana Coach of the Year in 1994.

Prior to his tenure at Hahnville, Barbier was an assistant coach at Archbishop Shaw High School, including four as the school's defensive coordinator.

Barbier, 1982 graduate of Nicholls State, is married to the former Donna Melancon and they have two children, Bobby (14) and Brittany (10).
