Men's Basketball Adds Georgia High School Standout

Nov. 30, 2000

NEW ORLEANS, La. - Karl Hollingsworth, a senior at Mt. Zion High School in Jonesboro, Ga., has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Tulane University and play basketball, Tulane coach Shawn Finney announced Thursday.

An honor student at Mt. Zion, Hollingsworth averaged 24.5 points, 10 rebounds and two assists per game as a junior playing for coach Rick Moore. Last year, he earned honorable mention all-state honors. A 6-5, 220-pound swingman, he was also named the player of the year in Clayton County and selected to the Atlanta Tip-Off Club Team of the Year. The senior is considered a top candidate for Georgia Mr. Basketball honors this year.

"Karl brings a lot of intangibles to our program such as hard work and intensity," Finney said. "He is a very versatile wing player who can shoot from outside, while also having the ability to score in the paint. Karl has been considered one of the top players in the country. He understands the game and knows how to play. We are excited about having the opportunity to coach and develop his game over the next four years. He will be a tremendous asset to Tulane on and off the court."

"Karl is a scorer, first and foremost," Moore said. "He was always a banger, but the second half of last year, he started to really shoot the ball. This year he could be the best shooter in the state of Georgia."

"We [Mt. Zion] had been competitive before he got here," Moore continued. "But he has led us to the regional championship two years in a row."

"Karl is going to provide an athletic boost at the small forward spot," said recruiting expert Dave Tellep of Rivals 100 Hoops. "He's always been a winner. He's a very tough kid and he is a good early signing for Tulane. As a player, he fits in well with Conference USA and especially the style that Shawn Finney wants to use."

Tulane is currently 3-2 after a fourth place finish at the Big Island Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii. The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday, playing a non-conference game at Southern Methodist in Dallas. The Wave returns home on Tuesday, Dec. 5, hosting Centenary at 7 p.m. at Fogelman Arena.
