NEW ORLEANS-- Tulane's basketball team opens the season Friday by hosting No. 20 Georgetown in the second half of a double header at approximately 8 p.m. CST in Fogelman Arena.

The Green Wave women host UL-Monroe in the first game at 5:30 p.m. CST in Fogelman.

Tulane is coming off a 78-64 exhibition victory over Loyola on Monday and were led by Kris Richard with 27 points, while Kevin Sims added 17 points and a team-high three assists.

Georgetown also opens their season Friday. The Hoyas did not play an exhibition game and will take to a crowded arena for the first time in 2009-10 on Friday.

"We are playing Georgetown with the present players they have, but when you play Georgetown, you also play against their tradition and their tradition in college basketball is one of the best," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "Our guys know the magnitude of this game. Georgetown has as much a name recognition as anybody in this area. They have had great players from New Orleans and great players from Louisiana. They have the best player from high school two years ago on their team."

The Hoyas bring the 2008 Louisiana High School Player of the Year and the 2009 BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Greg Monroe, a graduate of Helen Cox High School, with them to Fogelman along with head coach John Thompson III.

Tulane posted a 14-17 season a year ago that included four wins in the last six games. Georgetown was 16-15 last year, but dropped three of the final four games of the season.

"Our guys know this is a great opportunity and they know that Georgetown is one of the better programs in college basketball," Dickerson added. "Hopefully with that in mind we can come out and play with energy and aggressiveness and smartness we need to compete against a team like that."

The Green Wave played 12 players in the exhibition victory on Monday night and 10 of the 12 saw at least 10 minutes of playing time.

"We wanted to see a lot of guys play," Dickerson said. "But as a coach I know it is important to know that I'm not going to be able to play 12 guys. I'm thinking eight to 10 guys. We are very, very close on who we are counting on to play. To start this year out it is going to be important for us because our first four games are going to be very tough."

After Tulane hosts Georgetown on Friday, the Green Wave travel to Charleston, S.C., for the Charleston Classic to face Miami (Fla.) in the opening game on Thursday followed by either Penn State or UNC Wilmington on Friday and then either South Florida, Davidson, LaSalle or South Carolina on Sunday.
