NEW ORLEANS - Ed Conroy officially began his second season as the head coach of the Tulane men's basketball program Friday night when the 17-man roster took to the courts of the new state-of-the-art Hertz Practice Facility for the first practice of the 2011-12 season.
Conroy led the Green Wave for just over a two-hour practice, the first of many over the next three weeks for Tulane takes the court to play an exhibition game against Loyola on Nov. 6 at Fogelman Arena.
"This is always an exciting time," Conroy said. "Anyone associated with college basketball knows that mid-October is always the start of practice. This is an exciting preseason and we have a long way to go, but there is going to be a lot of fun days trying to figure it out. "
Lone senior Trent Rogers leads the group of five returning players that includes pre-season first-team All-Conference USA selection Kendall Timmons and junior guard Jordan Callahan. Also returning to the squad is sophomore center Kevin Thomas and junior guard Ben Cherry.
"I'm looking to these guys being out there as leaders and help coach the team," Conroy said. "These guys know what to expect and what we want."
Tulane brings 11 newcomers to the court as well. The roster consists of transfers Josh Davis, Dan Monkton and Tomas Bruha, freshmen Ricky Tarrant, Malte Ziegenhagen, Grant Fiorentinos, Jay Hook, Lotanna Nwogbo and Tre Drye, and a trio of walk-ons.
Tulane posted a 13-17 overall record last season in Conroy's first year at the helm.
