NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane Green Wave, under the leadership of new head coach Shawn Finney, will play a 29-game schedule in 2000-01 featuring seven teams that played in the NCAA Tournament last year. The Green Wave, which begins preseason practices on Oct. 14, warm up with a couple of exhibition games on November 5th and 9th before opening the regular season Friday, Nov. 17th versus Nicholls State in Fogelman Arena.
The 2000-01 schedule includes 16 games that will be played in New Orleans, including a match-up in the New Orleans Arena with 2000 Final Four team Florida as one-half of the Nokia Sugar Bowl doubleheader on Dec. 28th. Tulane will play six home games in the New Orleans Arena (capacity 17,832) and eight on the Tulane campus at Fogelman Arena (capacity 3,600). Tulane and the University of New Orleans play their annual game at Lakefront Arena on December 21.
"I think we've got a very competitive schedule," Finney said. "Having the opportunity to play Florida, Oklahoma, SMU and Mississippi State gives us good balance along with the very tough Conference USA games. I'm very excited about the conference schedule. Having Louisville, DePaul and Charlotte come into New Orleans gives us a great home schedule."
Tulane's non-conference line-up features a distinct Louisiana flavor. Games versus Nicholls State, Centenary, Loyola (N.O.), New Orleans and Southern dot the early portion of the schedule with each of those games played in New Orleans.
"The schedule creates local and statewide interest by playing five in-state schools, including our neighbor, Loyola," Finney said. "We hope those games create a tremendous amount of excitement about college basketball in the city."
Tulane will play four 2000 NCAA tournament teams in New Orleans. In addition to Florida, Southland Conference champion Lamar comes to Fogelman Arena Jan. 3, while Louisville and DePaul come to town in conference play. The Green Wave could meet up with Oklahoma in the second game of the Big Island Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii.
The Green Wave opens its 16-game conference schedule Jan. 7 with a game at UAB scheduled to be televised on espn2. Louisville is the first home C-USA opponent of 2001 as the Cardinals visit New Orleans Jan. 10.
