New Orleans - Tulane University senior forward David Gomez has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-District 8 First Team, as it was announced today by the NABC. Gomez was among 150 student-athletes from 15 districts selected and is now eligible for the State Farm Division I All-America teams, which will be announced on Saturday, April 5 at the 2008 NABC Convention.
A native of Baton Rouge, La., Gomez is a repeat performer to the all-district team, but is a first time member to the first team. Last season, he received all-district second team recognition. He is Tulane's first back-to-back selection since Brandon Brown in 2002 and 2003, and he is the first player to garner first team honors since Brown in 2003.
This season, Gomez has led the Green Wave to a 15-13 overall record with two games remaining in the regular season. He leads Tulane in scoring (14.3), rebounding (5.7) and blocked shots (1.6), and has scored in double figures 21 times in 28 games, including 13 straight contests at one point this season, and notched a season-best 24 points two times.
Earlier this season, Gomez became the 29th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau, and became the 14th player in the 98-year history of Tulane basketball to register career marks of 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
He was named the Conference USA Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 31, 2007 to Jan.6, 2008, and was also selected as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association for the week of Jan. 21-27, 2008.
A third team All C-USA selection a year ago, Gomez ranks 14th among the school's career scoring leaders with 1,317 points and also ranks 15th for career rebounds (591) and fourth for blocked shots (139).
Gomez also ranks in C-USA's Top 10 in field goal percentage (.531) and blocks (1.61 bpg). He moved into the No. 28 spot on the Conference USA career scoring chart.
