NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University junior Brandon Brown (Houma, La.) was named to the 2002 NABC/Pontiac All-District First Team the NABC announced Wednesday. He is the first First Team selection for the Green Wave since 1996.
Member coaches of the NABC (National Association of Basketball Coaches) select a first and a second team from each of 15 districts. Brown was recognized for District 8, which encompasses Louisiana and Arkansas.
"Brandon Brown is having an excellent junior year," Tulane head coach Shawn Finney said. "He has developed into a great player and I am excited that other coaches have recognized him as one of the best in our region."
Brown leads Tulane with 16.0 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. He also is the Conference USA leader in field-goal percentage, hitting 59.3 percent of his shots. He has seven 20-point games this season and has scored 48 points with 16 rebounds in the last two games for the Green Wave.
The last time Tulane had a First Team All-District player was in 1996, when both Jerald Honeycutt and Rayshard Allen were honored by the NABC. Brown is just the 14th Green Wave player to achieve the honor since 1950. Ledaryl Billingsley was a second team selection last season.
Joining Brown on the District 8 First Team are Ronald Dupree (LSU), Hector Romero (New Orleans), Gerrod Henderson (Louisiana Tech) and Wojciech Myrda (UL-Monroe). The second team honorees were Anthony Johnson (UL-Lafayette), Nick Zachary (Arkansas-Little Rock), Collis Temple (LSU), Jason Jennings (Arkansas State) and Jason Coleman (McNeese State).
The 150 student-athletes are now eligible for the NABC/Pontiac Division I All-American Team, which will be announced at the conclusion of the season.
Tulane, currently with a 12-10 record, returns to action on Saturday, hosting UAB at Fogelman Arena at 7 p.m.
