NEW ORLEANS - The Tulane men's hoops squad will look to hand Conference USA rival UAB its first home loss this season when the Green Wave begins a two-game road swing this Wednesday against the Blazers at Bartow Arena in Birmingham, Ala. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
Tulane (9-11, 3-4 C-USA) opens up at UAB and continues the trek this Saturday against Marshall at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, W. Va. The Wave has won two out of its last three outings, but had its two-game win streak snapped last Saturday at home against UCF in overtime, 79-74. Previously, TU knocked off Tulsa in overtime, 76-75, and won at Rice on a buzzer beater, 61-59.
Tulane is tied with Memphis for first in steals during league play (No. 3 overall with 7.75) with 8.14 per game, while sophomore Kris Richard is the league's steals leader during C-USA contests with 2.29 per contest.
UAB (14-8, 4-3 C-USA) began the year with a 4-0 mark and advanced to the NIT finals in New York before dropping back-to-back games to Oklahoma (77-67) and Boston College (83-77), and the Blazers concluded non-conference play with a 10-5 mark.
Since then, UAB has lost four players and is down to six total players for the remainder of the year. However, the team has won four out of its last five outings with its lone loss coming in the final seconds at Tulsa on Jan. 28. The Blazers are perfect at home this season with a 9-0 overall mark and a 3-0 league record, and are averaging 75.3 points per contest on its home floor while allowing its opponents just 55.5 per game.
Preseason C-USA Player of the Year selection, Robert Vaden leads three UAB players in double figure scoring with 18.7 points per game, while Paul Delaney III is second with 16.8 points per contest, and Lawrence Kinnard is hitting at 14.5 points a clip. Kinnard is also the team's top rebounder with 9.1 boards per outing.
Wednesday's game marks the 29th all-time meeting between Tulane and UAB, and the Blazers lead the series, 16-12. Tulane has a 5-9 record in Birmingham, but is 1-1 in its last two visits to the "Magic City" after posting a 76-74 win in the 2006-07 regular season finale on a last season shot by former Green Wave standout Matt Wheaton (2004-08).
The Green Wave treks to Marshall on Saturday, Feb. 7 for a 4 p.m. (CST) game on CBS College Sports. The game will be televised in New Orleans on Cox Cable, Channel 315, on DirecTV, Channel 613, and on Dish Network, Channel 152.
