NEW ORLEANS, La. - Tulane University aims to snap a three-game losing streak on Saturday, hosting Southern Miss in Conference USA men's basketball action at Fogelman Arena. Game time is 2 p.m.
The game will be the first re-match of the season for Tulane. The Green Wave defeated the Golden Eagles on Jan. 15, 70-61. In that game, Tulane connected on 56.1 percent (23-of-41) of its shots, while holding Southern Miss to 34.0 percent (17-of-50) from the field. Junior Brandon Brown (Houma, La.) led Tulane with 20 points in the victory.
Currently, the Green Wave is on a three-game losing streak, dropping its record to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in C-USA play. The losses have come to South Florida and UAB, followed by a hard-fought 68-66 defeat at the hands of 18-3 Marquette on Tuesday.
"The Marquette was our best effort of the season," Tulane head coach Shawn Finney said. "We played hard for 40 minutes and put ourselves in a position to win, but in the last three minutes we did not value the basketball and had costly turnovers. The next step is to learn how to win close games."
Southern Miss comes into Saturday's game with a 7-11 record, 2-6 in league action. After losing four in a row, the Golden Eagles rolled to a 67-46 victory over Saint Louis on Tuesday. Elvin Mims is the top offensive threat for USM, he averages 19.5 points and 7.6 rebounds, while also leading the team with 27 three-pointers.
"We will have to be emotionally and mentally prepared for Southern Miss," Finney said. "They are a very athletic team and they are coming off a big win over Saint Louis."
Brown leads the Green Wave with 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds, but Tulane also has three other players in double figures. Junior Brandon Spann (New Orleans, La.) has scored in double figures in seven straight games and has 13.4 points per game on the year, including a team-high 29 three-pointers. Junior Waitari Marsh (Chicago, Ill.) has 12.7 points per game while pacing the club in assists with 75. Junior Nick Sinville (Shreveport, La.) posted 13 points and eight rebounds in the Marquette game and has averages of 11.2 points and 6.1 rebounds this year.
Adding to the Green Wave attack in recent games has been Linton Johnson (Chicago, Ill.). The lone senior on the Green Wave roster, the 6-8 Johnson is averaging 16.0 points and 9.0 rebounds over the past two contests.
Following the Southern Miss contest, the Wave departs for Memphis on the afternoon of Super Bowl Sunday. Tulane faces the Tigers on Monday night at the Pyramid. That game is followed by another tough road contest on Saturday, Feb. 16 at South Florida.
