Green Wave Host UAB in C-USA Home Opener

NEW ORLEANS - Tulane's men's basketball team looks to even its Conference USA record when they hosts UAB in the conference home opener at Saturday at 7 p.m. CST in Fogelman Arena. This weekend is alumni weekend for the Green Wave men's basketball program. Former greats including John Arthurs, Brandon Spann and David Gomez, to name a few, will be back on campus and will be recognized at halftime. A promotion of buy one adult ticket and receive a free children's ticket is available for this game as well. Tickets can be purchased by contacting the Tulane Athletics Ticket Office at 504-861-WAVE. The Green Wave (5-9, 0-1 C-USA) fell, 73-59, in the C-USA opener at Tulsa on Wednesday night. Asim McQueen led Tulane with 16 points and six rebounds in the loss, while Kevin Sims and David Booker each added 12 points. UAB (13-2, 1-0 C-USA) defeated East Carolina, 76-68, at home on Wednesday. The Blazers, ranked just out of the top 25 in the Associated Press poll, were picked to finish behind Tulane is three of the four preseason C-USA polls, including 10th in two polls. "I hope I am not out of place by saying this, but UAB is probably the surprise team in college basketball," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "Everyone knows that Mike Davis is a championship coach, but he lost five starters last year so that speaks volumes to how good of a coach he is and most importantly how good the players are that he has right now." The two losses for UAB came at Kent State on Nov. 14 and at Virginia on Dec. 30. In between those losses, the Blazers won 10 straight and have now won 12 of the last 13 games, including two in a row. Tulane has dropped two straight games, but defeated North Carolina A&T in the last home game back on Dec. 30. Kris Richard, a junior guard, leads the Green Wave with 13.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. Sims, a senior guard, is averaging 13.1 points and 3.1 assists per outing and extended his double figure scoring streak to eight straight games with his 12 points at Tulsa. David Booker, a junior forward, adds 8.6 points and a team-high 4.5 rebounds per game. As a team the Green Wave is shooting 40.4 percent from the floor and leads the conference with a 75.0 free throw percentage. Tulane is scoring 64.4 points per game and allowing 65.3. Junior guard Elijah Millsap leads UAB with 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. Senior forward Howard Crawford is posting 12.8 points and 4.6 board and junior guard Jamarr Sanders adds 11.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. UAB shots 44.5 percent as a team from the floor and is scoring 71.2 points per game. The Blazers' defense allows 60.1 points and holds opponents to a 40.4 shooting percentage. This meeting will be the 31st between the two schools in a series that dates back to the 1992-93 season. UASB leads the series 18-12, including four straight wins. This will also be the 15th meeting between the two in New Orleans where each team has won seven. Tulane continues its home stand on Wednesday when Rice visits Fogelman Arena for a 7 p.m. CST tip.
