Green Wave Open C-USA at Tulsa on Wednesday
Jan. 5, 2010
TULSA, Okla. - Tulane's "second season" begins Wednesday when the Green Wave open the Conference USA schedule against Tulsa at 7 p.m. CST in the Reynolds Center. The Green Wave (5-8, 0-0 C-USA) wrapped up the non-conference schedule last Saturday at Lamar with a 70-67 loss that snapped a two-game win streak. Tulsa (10-3, 0-0 C-USA) completed its non-conference schedule with an 84-59 victory at home over Colorado on Saturday. The victory for the Golden Hurricane was the 10th at home this season in as many games and the 16th straight win in the Reynolds Center. Tulane enters conference play having been selected to place anywhere from fourth to eighth in the preseason polls by numerous media outlets. Tulsa was selected as the unanimous preseason favorite to win the conference and Golden Hurricane center Jermone Jordan was selected as the preseason Player of the Year. "We are in a situation now to where our season is a 16 game season. We have 16 conference games and starting off with Tulsa is a tall task, but we have played well against those guys the last three games," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "We've seen Jerome Jordan the last three years so we know what type of player he is, but if you look at Tulsa it is not all about Jerome Jordan. It is about Ben Uzoh and Justin Hurtt. Those guys are having great a year for Tulsa and it is not a stretch to have them be the best team in Conference USA." Jordan is posting 14.1 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game, while Uzoh leads the Golden Hurricane with 16.4 points and 4.4 assists per game as the point guard. Hurtt is scoring 14.8 points per outing. The Green Wave have won the last three meeting between the two schools, including back-to-back overtime wins. This will be the ninth meeting between the two schools and the sixth since Tulsa joined Conference USA. In those previous five conference match-ups the games have been decided by a total of 10 points with the Green Wave winning three. Last year Tulane won, 76-75, in overtime at Fogelman Arena. "The match-ups have worked well against Tulsa for us, but it is going to be a little different this year because we don't have that inside presents so we will have to improvise and gain that advantage is some other areas," Dickerson said. "It is great to have Kevin Sims and Kris Richard playing well right now. So we have to do a great job of rebounding which we have done the last four games and just have to make plays on the road, enough to be able to win a game like this." Richard, who is coming off his first career double double with 15 points and 12 rebounds at Lamar, leads Tulane with 13,8 points per game, while Sims who scored a game-high 19 at Lamar, is posting 13.2 points and dishing out 3.3 assists per game. Tulane will return to Fogelman Arena to open the home Conference USA schedule against UAB at 7 p.m. CST. PROBABLE STARTERS
