Men's Basketball Falls to Ala.-Birmingham, 88-78

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Damon Cobb scored 23 points and Alabama-Birmingham got a combined 39 points from reserves Fred Williams and Willie Mitchell as the Blazers beat Tulane, 88-78, in the Conference USA opener for each team Wednesday night. UAB (10-4) also outshot Tulane (5-4) by 30-16 - 27-12 in the second half - as three Green Wave starters fouled out.

The Blazers led 31-29 at halftime, outshooting Tulane 59 to 33 percent, then sprinted to a 57-49 advantage the rest of the way. Williams had 23 points and Mitchell had 16 off the bench, while UAB also got 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds from Antonio Jackson.

Reserve Ledaryl Billinglsey led Tulane with 17 points. Dylan Osean added 16 points for the Green Wave, Morris Jordan had 13 and Marlo Miles added 12.
