EDINBURG, Texas - Kendall Timmons and Josh Davis each posted double doubles and Timmons made history for the Tulane men's basketball team in a 53-42 victory over Texas-Pan American on Saturday afternoon to close out the 2011 year at the UTPA Field House.
Timmons' 17th and final point of the game gave the junior 1,000 points for his career, becoming the 32nd player in Green Wave (12-2) history to reach the milestone. Timmons added 11 rebounds in the win and Davis posted 10 points and a game-high 14 boards.
Defense reigned supreme during the game, though. Tulane shot just 39.9 percent from the floor and committed 19 turnovers, while UTPA (4-12) hit 28.0 percent from the floor and had 16 turnovers.
"This was the wacky world of going on the road in college basketball," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "There were a lot of adjustments to be made today and it wasn't the prettiest of basketball games. I compliment both sides today for the great effort in the game, especially on the defensive end. Neither team wanted to give an inch."
Neither team scored during the first two minutes of the game before UTPA Jared Maree hit a pair of free throws and Enique Mason made a lay-up to put the Broncs up 4-0, their largest lead of the game.
Tulane tied it up with lay-ups from Davis and Tarrant. UTPA scored three of the next five points before surrendering the lead for good on a lay-up by Timmons with 11:47 left in the half. The Green Wave led 21-14 with 2:25 remaining before UTPA scored the final five point of the half to cut the deficit to 21-19 at the break.
The Green Wave scored six straight to open the half with lay-ups from Davis and Timmons and a pair of free throws by Ben Cherry and eventually build a double figure lead, 37-26 with 11:36 left. Tulane's largest lead of the game, 49-36, came with 7:08 to play.
The Broncs never got closer than nine the rest of the game.
Tulane did connect on 14 of 27 shots from the floor in the second half, including a pair of 3-pointers. The Green Wave also won the battle on the boards, 45-30, including grabbing 14 on the offensive end.
Brandon Provost led UTPA with 11 points, while Mason had seven points and seven boards off the bench. Tulane opens Conference USA play Wednesday at UCF at 6 p.m. CT in UCF Arena in Orlando.
