PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico - Despite getting a combined 35 points from Louis Dabney and Jay Hook, the Tulane men's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Cure UCD Classic in Mexico to Texas State, 70-52, on Friday afternoon in the Puerto Vallarta Convention Center.
Dabney scored 19 points to lead all scorers in the game, while Hook added 16 for the Green Wave (4-3) who dropped its third straight decision.
Texas State (1-5) opened the game by scoring the first seven points and never looked back. Tulane was able to tie it up at 9-9 with just over four minutes gone by in the game, but the Bobcats never surrendered the lead and built as much as a nine point advantage in the opening 20 minutes before owning a 33-28 lead at the break.
"This is several games in a row now that we have not started the way we need too," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "We've tried different things, but we just simply have not started the games to give ourselves the best chance to be successful."
Tulane was able to cut the deficit back down to one early in the second half, 33-32, less than two minutes into the half, but Texas State scored five straight points to retake a six-point advantage Tulane never got closer than four the rest of the way. The Bobcat's largest lead was the 18-point final margin.
"Credit Texas State for coming out the way they did tonight," Conroy added. "They were very aggressive, had great ball pressure and really got out in the passing lanes. We didn't handle it well."
Tulane turned the ball over 19 times that led to 28 points for the Bobcats.
The Green Wave shot 47.5 percent from the floor in the game, including 50.0 percent in the opening half. Texas State connected on 53.8 percent of their field goals, including 55.6 percent in the first 20 minutes. The Bobcats won the rebound battle, 27-25.
Jonathan Stark added 12 points and a game-high six rebounds for Tulane.
Texas State was led by Wes Davis' 16 points, while Joel Wright added 14 points and a team-best five boards.
Tulane will wrap-up the Cure UCD Classic on Saturday when they face Southeast Missouri at 4 p.m. CT.
"It will be a heck of a challenge tomorrow," Conroy said. "I know we will come out and give a great effort. We are at a stage right where we just have to execute better and grow as a team."
