NEW ORLEANS -- Seniors Kevin Sims and Asim McQueen led the Tulane men's basketball team to a hard fought 76-71 victory over George Mason on Saturday afternoon at Fogelman Arena.

Sims scored 22 points in today's victory, missing his career-high by one, while McQueen added 16 points and a game-high seven rebounds for the Green Wave (2-3).

"The level of play was very good," Tulane head coach Dave Dickerson said. "We had a chance to get our play makers out in areas where they could make plays. Our problems are still can we rebound consistently and can we play defense consistently and we did a pretty good job in both of those areas today."

George Mason (3-3) led 36-33 at halftime after using a 7-0 run late in the first half to overtake Tulane. The Patriots expanded the three point halftime lead to six after a Mike Morrison dunk with 18:17 left in the game. Tulane then used a 10-2 run to retake the lead, 44-42, on a McQueen jump shot with 16:20 left. The Green Wave would not give the lead up the rest of the game.

Mason did fight back to knot the score at 64-64 when Cam Long knocked down a 3-pointer with 2:26 remaining. That shot by Long capped a 14-6 run for the Patriots, but they would not have enough to retake the lead.

Sims proceeded to hit two of his 12 made free throws to give Tulane the lead again. Sims knocked down two more free throws with 0:07 left to ice the game.

For the game Sims connected on four of seven from the floor and 12 of 13 from the line. The senior also connected on both of his 3-point attempts, including one with 3:28 left in the game to give Tulane a 63-58 lead.

Long finished with a game-high 24 points, while Luke Hancock added 14 points off the bench.

Tulane shot a season-high 46.3 percent from the floor, including 48.0 percent in the second half. The Green Wave also dished out 17 assists, blocked eight shots and collected 12 steals.

McQueen led the way with three blocks and four steals.

"Asim was as good as we thought he could be today," Dickerson said. "We needed him to play well for us today and he did. More so than points and rebounds, he established the toughness of the team today."

Aaron Holmes added 10 points and David Booker chipped in with eight points in the victory.

Tulane's defense held George Mason to 36.7 percent shooting in the second half and forced 20 turnovers in the game. Those 20 turnovers led to 20 Green Wave points.

Mason shot 45.6 percent from the floor in the game.

Each team grabbed 33 rebounds and Tulane turned 12 offensive boards into 16 second chance points.

The Green Wave will host Alabama State on Monday at 5:30 p.m. CST looking to put together a win streak.
