New Orleans -Tulane senior Chris Moore led four players into double figures with a team-high 17 points and the Green Wave held off a late charge by Charleston Southern for a 75-69 victory at Fogelman Arena. Tulane improved to 2-1 overall and has now won back-to-back games since dropping the season opener to Butler. Charleston Southern dropped to 2-2 and suffered its first loss since its first game of the season. The Green Wave stormed out of the gates with a 20-4 run and led by as many as 17 points on two occasions in the first half, including 27-10 with 7:10 remaining in the opening period. But Charleston Southern began to chip away at its early deficit when V.J. Fails ignited a 14-1 run with his lay-up, and with 3:19 remaining before halftime the Buccaneers had scraped back to within five points. Moore silenced the run with his timely three-pointer and junior Donnie Stith hit 1-of-2 free throws to increase the TU lead to nine points. CSU hit three baskets in the final two minutes and trailed the Greenies, 35-30, at the break. After seeing its hard work in the first half diminished to just a five-point lead, Tulane once again had the hot hand at the beginning of the second half. TU opened the second period with four straight buckets, including a Moore trey and consecutive dunks by Stith and junior David Gomez. TU led 44-30 before CSU's Dwayne Jackson answered the run with a jumper at the 16:12 mark.
Tulane once again built a double-digit lead in the early stages, but Charleston Southern's own Chris Moore rattled off back-to-back treys to pull his team to within seven points. The two teams then traded baskets before Giedrius Knysas scored six straight points to move the Buccaneers to within striking distance of the lead, 52-48. Minutes later, Knysas scored five straight points during a brief stretch and Tulane was clinging to a one-point lead with 7:14 remaining. The game tightened during the final stretch, and although the Green Wave never relinquished its lead, it never led by more than five points and kept the crowd on the edge of its seats. A pair of Jackson free throws with 0:33 remaining pulled CSU to within three points. Following a free throw by Tulane's Moore, Donnell Covington misfired on a three-point attempt and Moore grabbed the rebound for TU and was immediately fouled. He converted by charity shots into points and the Wave held on for the victory. Freshman Kevin Sims came off the bench and scored a career-best 16 points, while Gomez was steady with 12 points in 14 minutes. Stith was the final Greenie to reach double figures with 10 points. Senior Kory Castine continued to provide Tulane with valuable minutes, contributing eight points and a team-best eight rebounds in his starting role. For the second straight game, TU managed to catch fire in a half, hitting 57.1 percent of its attempts in the second half, and out-rebounding Charleston Southern, 75-69. CSU's Chris Moore led all scorers with 20 points and grabbed eight boards in the loss. |
