New Orleans - Brandon Crone led four Butler players in double figures with a game-high 18 points and the Bulldogs nailed 12 three-pointers en route to a 77-37 victory over the Tulane Green Wave in the season opener for both teams in front of 2,110 at Fogelman Arena.
Sophomore Robinson Louisme and junior David Gomez combined for 15 points in the loss for Tulane (0-1). Junior Donnie Stith grabbed a team-best five rebounds, while senior Andrew Garcia dished out a team-high five assists.
Butler (1-0) never trailed in the contest and built a 10-point advantage on a three-pointer by Marcus Nellems at the 12:33 mark. The Bulldogs drained seven treys in the opening stanza and continued to build on its lead. After back-to-back jumpers by Gomez, BU used a 10-4 run to increase its lead to 20 points with 2:37 remaining in the first half, and held Tulane to without a field goal during the final 4:21 to lead at intermission, 43-19.
The second half was almost a mirror image of the first period for Tulane. The Wave couldn't find its form and managed to connect on just 28-percent (7-25) of its attempts in the final half. TU also struggled from beyond the arc, going 0-for-6 in the second half.
Butler kept Tulane off the scoreboard for the first 6:10 of the second half before Louisme connected on 1-of-2 free throw attempts and Stith broke loose for an easy lay-up in the paint. However, the Bulldogs shot 56.5 percent in the second half and built its largest lead of 45 points on three occasions.
Tulane returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 14 against cross-town rival New Orleans at Fogelman Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
