MIAMI, Fla. - In the first and only Conference USA meeting between the Tulane men's basketball team and FIU, the Panthers upended the visiting Green Wave on senior day with a 73-47 victory on Sunday afternoon in the U.S. Century Bank Arena.
FIU (14-16, 6-9 C-USA) jumped out early and led 10-0 in the first four minutes of the game and Tulane (16-14, 8-7 C-USA) was never able to recover. The Green Wave never got closer than six the rest of the first half and trailed, 38-28, at the break.
Tulane did score the first four points of the second half on a pair of free throws and a lay-up by Tre Drye to cut the deficit to six, 38-32. FIU got the lead back to eight before Jay Hook drained a three-pointer with 14:50 left in the game to cut it back to down five, but the Green Wave would not get any closer.
FIU used an 8-0 run less than a minute later to retake a double digit lead, one they would surrender the rest of the game. The Panthers largest lead was the final difference of 26.
"FIU played well and you have to credit them," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "They played with great rhythm and confidence on the offensive end and shot the ball as well as they have all year. At the same time, our guys new what we were walking into and we tried to prepare them for that. We have to get better and get better right from the start."
Tulane shot 36.2 percent from the floor that included hitting 11-of-18 (61.1 percent) in the first half, but FIU connected on 50.0 percent from the field and knocked down a season-high nine three-pointers.
Louis Dabney led the Green Wave with 13 points despite playing only 26 minutes due to foul trouble. Drye finished the game with 12 points and Jonathan Stark added 11 points and a game-high six rebounds.
Drye and Hook each pulled down seven rebounds to lead Tulane.
Senior Rakeem Buckles led FIU in his final home game with 20 points and 13 rebounds, while fellow senior Tymell Murphy added 19 points.
