HOUSTON (AP) - Kenny Younger had a game-high 24 points and 10 rebounds and Gee Gervin hit two crucial free throws with 17 seconds to play as Houston beat Tulane 76-72 Saturday night.
It was a season-high third consecutive win for Houston (10-13, 5-8 Conference USA). Tulane (10-12, 4-9) slipped into sole possession of last place in the CUSA National Division.
Gervin, the son of former NBA great George Gervin, finished with 17 points and a game-high seven assists. Chad Hendrick added 11 points for UH. William Stringfellow led Houston with 14 rebounds
Ledaryl Billingsley led Tulane with 20 points and a 19 rebounds. Dylan Ocean had 16 points and Byron Mouton 11 for Tulane.
Tulane couldn't find the basket early, missing 10 of its first 11 shots as Houston jumped to a 9-2 lead. But with the help of two three-pointers by Ocean, the Green Wave battled back to lead 12-11.
The teams traded baskets for several minutes until Younger hit three straight baskets for a 24-18 lead.
But turnovers kept UH from shaking Tulane. The Coogs had 10 the first half and managed only a 37-31 halftime lead despite shooting considerably better -- 14 of 31 (.452) vs. Tulane's 9 of 43 (.209) -- from the field.
But the Green Wave came out the second half shooting much better, hitting its first four shots and 8 of its first 15 to take a 58-56 lead with 7:26 to play. Billingsley led the way in that span, scoring nine points.
Tulane led 70-68 with 2:44 to play but made three critical turnovers the rest of the way and didn't score until Billingsley hit a basket at the buzzer.
Ahead 72-70 with 17 seconds to play, Gervin hit two free throws to seal the
win.
