Tulane Has No Answer for DePaul's Brown
Feb 3, 2004
ROSEMONT, Ill. - Andre Brown scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead DePaul University to a 72-58 victory over Tulane University in Conference USA men's basketball action on Tuesday evening at Allstate Arena. Tulane (7-11, 0-7 C-USA) was led by sophomore Quincy Davis who tallied 19 points and eight rebounds. The Green Wave trailed 42-32 after a Davis tip-in with 17:50 to go, but Brown erupted for nine straight points as the Blue Demons built the lead to 51-34 with 14 minutes to go. "Andre Brown was a man tonight," Tulane coach Shawn Finney said. "We did not have an answer for him. Our plan was to trap him and limit his touches, but he just kept getting offensive boards and running the floor." After Brown's individual rally, Davis keyed a 9-4 Wave run. The sophomore recorded a pair of dunks and a three-point play while freshman Kory Castine scored on a nifty spin move to make it 55-43 with 8:31 to go. However, the Wave would not get closer than the final margin. Tulane went ice-cold in the second half, missing 10-of-17 free throws and all four of its three-point attempts. Meanwhile Brown shot 9-for-12 from the field in the game while Drake Diener tallied 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Delonte Holland and Quemont Greer each added 11 for the Demons. For the game, the Wave shot just 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field, while DePaul hit 40.0 percent (24-of-60) of its shots. The Blue Demons held a 50-38 advantage on the boards while Tulane turned it over 15 times while forcing 14 miscues. The Wave matched its season-high with 12 steals.
The game opened on a sour note for the Wave as it committed five turnovers in the first five minutes and fell behind 17-4. However, freshman Vincent Camper came off the bench and scored four points while adding an assist to spark a 12-1 Tulane run to make it 18-16 with 11:25 to go. DePaul then stelled down and built the margin back to eight, 37-29 at the break.
"We made some mistakes early," Finney said. "But we settled down and took care of the ball and jumped right back in the game. That was good to see; we have to learn to fight all 40 minutes." The Green Wave returns to action on Saturday evening, hosting the University of South Florida at Fogelman Arena at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are currently available by calling 504-861-WAVE. |
