Men's Hoops Falls Short Against TCU, 93-84
FORT WORTH, Texas - Tulane managed to cope with the loss of one starter. However, the loss of a second starter proved to be too much as the Green Wave fell 93-84 to TCU in Conference USA men's basketball action on Wednesday evening at the Daniel-Meyer Coliseum. Tulane (7-10, 0-4 C-USA) opened the game without the services of starting power forward Nick Sinville, who was home in New Orleans due to illness. However, the Green Wave jumped to a 9-0 advantage, mainly behind the efforts of Waitari Marsh, who had 18 first-half points. The Wave lead would grow to 16 before TCU (7-9, 1-4 C-USA) battled back. The Horned Frogs used a 26-12 run over the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza to pull within one at 41-39 at the break. "We came out with a lot of emotion," Tulane head coach Shawn Finney said. "But on the road you have to be prepared to handle runs by your opponent. We did not handle that and had six turnovers in 11 possessions to let them back into the game." The two teams traded blows through the opening minutes of the second half with a Wayne Tinsley layup giving the Wave a 55-54 advantage. Unfortunately, after the Tinsley layup, with 13:33 to go in the game, Marsh went down with a sprained ankle, marking the second Wave starter out of the lineup. Over the remainder of the game, Tulane was outscored 39-29. The majority of TCU's points came from the foul line as Tulane scrambled to make up the deficit. The Frogs were 21-of-26 from the line in the second half.
"Clearly it is difficult with one starter back home and one sitting on the bench," Finney said. "But we still need to handle the adversity better than we did. We stopped defending the way we had been early in the game."
TCU shot just 37.5 percent (15-of-40) from the field in the first half, but responded with 60 percent (15-of-25) shooting in the second half. Marsh finished with 20 points in 21 minutes of action to lead Tulane, while Brandon Brown tallied 18 points and six rebounds. Tinsley collected a season-high 14 points, while Ivan Pjevcevic checked into double figures with 10. TCU was led by 25 points from Corey Santee, while Jamal Brown added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Junior Blount chipped in with 15 points in the victory. Tulane returns to action on Saturday, hosting UAB at 2 p.m. at Fogelman Arena. |
