Final Stats

New Orleans - Marshall's Chris Ross connected on a free throw with 1:52 remaining to snap a 69-69 tie and teammate Tre Whitted nailed a three-point seconds later to help the Thundering Herd to a 79-73 Conference USA victory in front of 2,251 at Fogelman Arena.

Marshall (7-11, 2-3 C-USA) built a 13-point lead at halftime and looked to have the game in control heading into the final 20 minutes. However, Tulane (8-8, 1-3 C-USA) had other plans. Following the break, Marshall's Jean Francois Bro Grebe turned a TU turnover into a lay-up and gave the Herd a 41-26 advantage, it largest of the game, just 35-seconds into the second half.

TU junior David Gomez converted a conventional three-point play that pulled the Wave to within 12 points, but more importantly ignited a 21-3 Tulane run and energized the crowd. For the second straight game, junior Donnie Stith came off the bench and sparked the Green Wave with his play. During the run, Stith accounted for eight points, including his lay-up that pulled Tulane to within one point at the 13:54 mark.

Moore sent the Fogelman faithful into a frenzy when he buried his second three-pointer during the run and gave the Green Wave just its second lead of the game since the opening minutes. Stith and freshman Asim McQueen each broke free inside the paint for a pair of lay-ups and sent Tulane out to a six-point lead.

A lay-up by Bro Grebe ended the TU run and gave the Herd its first field goal in over five minutes. Tulane eventually extended its lead to seven points, and the two teams battle back-and-forth for the next three minutes until foul trouble halted any kind of momentum for the Wave.

Marshall fought back and took a 62-60 lead when Ross was fouled and converted a three-point play with a free throw with 6:33 remaining. Moore tied the game at 62 apiece and the balance of the contest swung each way with four ties over the next three minutes. However, after Ross and Whitted combined for their crucial five points, Tulane only managed to pull to within two points with 0:28 remaining, but was forced to foul and Marshall connected of 4-of-6 attempts from the charity stripe during the final seconds.

Moore led Tulane with 18 points, while Stith finished in double figures for the second straight game with 16 points and a game-high nine rebounds. TU out-rebounded Marshall, 36-30, but the Herd faired better from the field, hitting 50.9 percent of their attempt en route to their first league win on the road this season. Tulane shot 49.1 percent for the field.

Markel Humphrey led for Herd players into double figure scoring with 20 points, while Travis Aikens and Mark Dorris each added 13 points. Whitted finished with 10 points.

Marshall sprung out of the gates in the first half and led for all but two minutes. The Thundering Herd scorched the nets with their 61.5 percent field goal shooting and built its largest lead of 13 on two occasions, including Darryl Merthie's jumper with 0:04 remaining in the first half that gave UM a 39-26 advantage at the break.
