DALLAS - Despite getting 24 points from sophomore guard Ricky Tarrant and a double double from junior forward Josh Davis, the Tulane men's basketball team could not get past SMU on Saturday afternoon, falling 59-53, in the Conference USA game in Moody Coliseum.

Tarrant poured in 15 of his 24 in the second half, while Davis posted 15 points and 10 rebounds to collect his ninth double double of the season for the Green Wave (12-5, 0-2 C-USA)

Defense was the key of the game and SMU (11-7, 1-2 C-USA) got the best of Tulane. The Green Wave was held to just 31.8 percent shooting from the floor, including hitting just two-of-16 from 3-point range. Tulane also committed 21 turnovers.

The Mustangs shot 46.8 percent from the floor in the game, but committed 18 turnovers.

"Our guys played extremely hard in the second half," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "They really fought to give themselves a chance. But, simply, I've never had our team turn the ball over like that and shoot the ball like that. It was just not a very good performance on the offensive end."

The first half of the game saw five lead changed and two ties before SMU pulled away by using a 16-2 run that gave the Mustangs a 25-16 lead with 3:02 left before the half. SMU eventually took a 29-19 lead into the locker room.

Tulane did outscore SMU, 34-30, in the second half but was never able to get closer than six. The Mustangs built up their largest lead of 14 during the first five minutes of the half before Tulane chipped away to get the deficit inside single digits. A pair of free throws by Davis cut the SMU lead to 54-48 with 0:47 left and a 3-pointer by Callahan as time expired also made the difference six.

Callahan finished the game with 10 points.

SMU was led by Nick Russell's 13 points and seven assists, while Jalen Jones, Ryan Manuel and London Giles each posted 10 points.

Tulane won the battle on the boards, 33-28, led by Davis' 10. Tre Drye added five and Jay Hook came off the bench to collect four rebounds.

Tulane will have a week off before hosting Tulsa at 1 p.m. CT next Saturday in Devlin Fieldhouse in a game televised on Cox Sports Television.
