DENTON, Texas - The guard trio of Jonathan Stark, Louis Dabney and Jay Hook combined for 49 of Tulane's 73 points to lead the Green Wave men's basketball team to a Conference USA road win, 73-62, over North Texas on Saturday afternoon at the Super Pit.
Stark led the all scorers in the game with 20 points, while Dabney added 19 and Hook chipped in 10 for the Green Wave (9-8, 1-1 C-USA), who never trailed in the game.
"I honestly don't know if I've ever been more proud of a group than I am right now," Tulane head coach Ed Conroy said. "We just got thrashed on Thursday night after going into that game with high expectations and I didn't know how much we'd have left in the tank after traveling through the night and the hard practice yesterday. I just wanted to see us compete and we did just that with a gutty effort."
Tulane scored the first five points of the game and North Texas (9-7, 0-2 C-USA) was able to tie the score twice the rest of the game. The Green Wave built as much as a nine point lead in the opening half by using a 10-2 run midway through the half. Tulane then held a 24-14 lead with 5:23 left after a three-pointer by Tre Drye, but North Texas chipped away and closed the half on a 13-3 run to knot the score at 27-27 at halftime.
The Green Wave took the momentum back away from the Mean Green by scoring the first nine points of the second half and North Texas never got closer than four the remainder of the game.
The run to open the half was sparked by a pair of Louis Dabney free throws, followed by a jumper and three-pointer from Stark and was capped by two free throws from Hook.
Tulane built a double digit lead for good with a 10-3 run after North Texas cut the deficit to four. A Jumper by Dabney with 4:47 remaining lifted the lead to 64-53.
Tulane's defense shined in the victory, holding three North Texas starters to zero points, including the Mean Green's leading scorer Alzee Williams. Williams was 0-7 shooting in the game and NT as a team hit just 37.5 percent from the floor and was just three-of-12 from three-point range. T.J. Taylor scored 19 off the bench to lead NT.
The Green Wave also collected six steals and forced 12 turnovers that were converted into 18 points.
Tulane shot 40.4 percent from the floor, including five-of-18 from three-point range. The Green Wave also knocked down 22-of-28 free throw attempts, including 16-of-18 in the second half to preserve the win.
Dabney led Tulane's rebounding effort with nine. The Green Wave outrebounded North Texas, 41-37. Hook grabbed six and Cameron Reynolds pulled down nine. Reynolds also posted nine points.
